98: Raj Chellaraj (Stanford/Hoover) on Inspiring Operational Excellence
Our guest today, Raj Chellaraj, brings an extraordinarily diverse background to the subject of leadership and financial management in higher education.
Currently, Raj jointly serves as Senior Advisor to both thex Director of the Hoover Institution and to the President of Stanford University on matters of finance and operations. Previously, he served as Chief Financial Officer and Administrative Dean of Stanford's Graduate School of Business.
What makes Raj's background particularly interesting is the breadth of his leadership experience outside academia. In addition to holding senior executive positions in the private sector, Raj served as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration under President George W. Bush, overseeing administrative operations for one of the federal government's most complex organizations.
Few academic administrators bring such an unusual combination of experience in business, government, and higher education.
In this instructive conversation conducted by Jim and Dave, Raj talks about his experience exploring a dimension of academic leadership that many deans have had relatively little preparation for: building, managing, and getting the most out of the administrative organizations that support our schools.
