You Don't Have To Clean Up Your Life Before Coming To Jesus | Why He Ate Dinner With 'Sinners'
In today's Daily Hope, Pastor John S. Dickerson walks through one of the most socially explosive moments in Luke chapter 5. After Jesus calls Levi the tax collector to be His disciple, Levi throws a huge banquet in his own home with Jesus as the guest of honor, surrounded by fellow tax collectors and people everyone considered "sinners." The religious leaders are appalled and confront Jesus's disciples: "Why do you eat and drink with such scum?" Jesus's answer captures the heart of the Gospel: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent." Pastor John points out how uncomfortable this moment must have been for Peter, James, John, and Andrew, suddenly surrounded by the exact kind of people they'd normally avoid. But that discomfort is often exactly where God is at work. You don't have to clean up your life or feel good enough before coming to Jesus—He came specifically for the people who know they're not okay.
