Discourses and Sayings of our Lord; John Brown
Editor's Note: This recording ends one or two minutes early due to a technical cutoff. Thanks for your understanding. What does Jesus really mean when He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”? The world tells us that happiness is found in wealth, success, possessions, recognition, and independence. But in the Beatitudes, Jesus turns the world’s definition of happiness upside down. In this episode of The Brother Carlton Show, I open a remarkable work that has influenced me for decades: Discourses and Sayings of Our Lord by the Scottish theologian John Brown (1784–1858). Beginning with Matthew 5 and the Beatitudes, we examine what it really means to be “poor in spirit”—and why this poverty is not weakness, ignorance, or material poverty. It is humility before God. The truly poor in spirit recognize that they have no righteousness of their own in which to boast. They understand their dependence upon the mercy of God and look outside themselves to Jesus Christ and His righteousness. That is completely contrary to the spirit of our age. We are constantly told to believe in ourselves, exalt ourselves, accumulate more, achieve more, and become self-sufficient. Christ points us in another direction. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3 KJV This is the first in a series of readings and reflections from John Brown’s classic work on the teachings of Jesus.
