The Bench Beside the Lake
When workers replace an old bench beside Lake Merrow, they discover a rusted tin buried beneath it containing forty-two letters written across more than four decades. The letters belonged to Eleanor Reed and slowly reveal her connection to Margaret Hale, a young woman who vanished in 1966.
Eleanor had long suspected that Margaret was killed near the lake by Samuel Voss, a powerful local man whose family helped keep the truth buried. Decades later, Samuel finally confessed where Margaret’s body had been hidden—but Eleanor, trapped by shame over her own years of silence, still could not bring herself to go to police.
The letters eventually lead investigators to Margaret’s remains and give her surviving family the truth they had waited fifty-seven years to hear. The buried tin becomes a haunting reminder that some secrets are hidden not to disappear forever, but because someone hopes the future will be braver than they were.
