On October 17, 2026, prominent Guatemalan anti-corruption lawyer and former prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa was assassinated at the Campo Marte sports complex in Guatemala City, with his 14-year-old son nearby. Another man, Gustavo Adolfo Aguilar Gamarro, was also killed.

Police initially arrested two brothers, but both were released for lack of evidence. The investigation then took a shocking turn when seven police officers faced criminal proceedings over alleged misconduct, including suspected evidence fabrication.
