Why Gas Prices Don’t Follow Party Lines
Three things worth knowing before this airs, all carried on the Corrected Record page: Ohio is no longer the cheapest state (it was $3.71 on 8 October, it’s $4.40 today; North Carolina is cheapest at $3.48), Valero told analysts on 22 October it has “no plans to restart” Benicia, which resolves the episode’s open watch item, and a Democratic governor, Josh Stein in North Carolina, suspended his gas tax on 9 October, which may be broadcast day. Everything else held or tightened (the 27-cent party gap and the 18-cent gap without the West computed out exactly; the $1.40 California figure only works if you count LCFS and cap-and-trade; the CEC vote was 29 August 2025, four and a half months after Valero’s notice, not four). DESCRIPTION Cross from Virginia into Tennessee and gas drops about twenty cents. Cross from Arizona into California and it climbs a dollar and a half. Put three facts like that on a screen and they say Democrats did it. Put three other facts on the screen, a record September, a war, a closed strait, and they say Trump did it. Every one of those facts is true. Not one of them is the reason for the price. That was settled decades ago, by something that has never been on a ballot. This episode shows you where the price actually comes from, which governors of which parties signed off on it, and why a term-limited governor just suspended his gas tax for the fourth time this year. You’ll be able to call the next headline before it loads. ABOUT INTELLIGENCE BRIEF Daily intelligence on the stories that actually move the world, and the patterns that connect them. Structure first.
