TED-2014-08-27 – Scanners

What is a Scanner and the Types: Modern scanners typically use a charge-coupled device(CCD) or a Contact Image Sensor(CIS) as the image sensor. Scanners produce two-dimensional images of subjects that are usually flat, but sometimes solid; 3D scanners produce information on the three-dimensional structure of solid objects. Digital cameras can be used as scanners with apps. This could also include things like QR & Bar codes. There are even dedicated devices attached to a platform to scan documents and books, usually very costly. Scanning resolution should also always be done at 16bit at a minimum with any scanner. Do not use 8bit as quality will come out very low. Resolution is measured in pixels per inch(ppi), sometimes more accurately referred to as Samples per inch(spi). Instead of using the scanner's true optical resolution. Manufacturers like to refer to the interpolated resolution, which is much higher thanks to software interpolation. As of 2009, a high-end flatbed scanner can scan up to 5400 ppi or better. Scanners can have WiFi, USB or FireWire connections. WiFi probably makes it the most portable and universal for things like smartphones, desktops, tablets & phablets. Scans can be saved and various formats like PDF for documents, GIF or JPG/Jpeg or PNG for images. OCR(optical character recognition) software to use with word processing. Saved on various media like print, memory card, hard drives, DVD(digital video disk) and the like. Most scanners also come bundled with software of some type. Some things to look for or questions to ask: - Bundled software for photos, documents or OCR(optical character recognition) - Connecting cables: USB, FireWire, AC adapter etc... - Resolution: the higher the better at least 2400dpi or better top resolution - Color or Monochrome: and does at least least 16bit or better for depth - LED lamp for faster warm-up and energy savings My recommendation would depend on you needs and services. The top of my list would be: VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand II with WiFi. Plustek or Visioneer brands. Neat for full software and scanner combination, thou a little pricey and come in both desktop or mobile versions. ION for photo, film or negative/slide conversion I.E. ION Pics 2 with easy single button operation.
