TED Podcast Extras – VisBuzz

VisBuzz very simple operating systems for the elders that are NOT tech savvy and computer shy to connect via video calls with friends and family by just touching a familiar face picture of them. Send or receive calls and has names attached with the pictures. A GREAT way to keep from being isolated if you can not get out much. This can be purchased as a complete system includes tablet and operating system. OS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) can also be purchased separately for self install on your equipment. Also includes 1 year subscription of system access and email with either complete system or stand alone OS. VisBuzz unit is 4G (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G) cell technology for Internet connection of at least 1mb/s. UK based company but available in any English speaking country. VisBuzz unit is a 8" Dell tablet but can be put on any tablet, laptop or touch based desktop. Their site shows only UK pricing but they are easy to contact: care@visbuzz.com (mailto:care@visbuzz.com) I have communicated with them. Ask where it can be purchased in your area outside the UK. Or contact Dell directly as they are partnered with them. It is web/cloud based and runs on Google Chrome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome). Access from anywhere. Requires Internet connection. You also have to provide the photos for it to be setup and ready for use when it arrives in about a month from purchase date. VisBuzz was developed on Microsoft Azure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Azure) platform using WebRTC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebRTC) and SignalR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SignalR) via an HTML5 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5) website, enabling real-time cloud based video communication. VisBuzz is compatible with: Windows: Any Windows based PC, laptop or tablet operating on Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 accessing the Internet through the Google Chrome browser. Apple: Any iPad or iPhone 4S, 5S or 5C operating on iOS6 or iOS7 – the VisBuzz app is free to download from the iStore. (An iPhone would be used by an administrator or contact, rather than a central User, due to its size.) Android: Android devices have not supported WebRTC until recently. VisBuzz works well however it needs two touches (rather than the one) to communicate. Google is working on this issue and hopes to have it resolved by mid Autumn 2014. Who VisBuzz is for: - you are uncomfortable with technology - physically isolated - psychologically isolated, including people with early stage Alzheimer’s and Dementia. - physically unable to operate a keyboard or mouse, for example those with conditions such as late–stage arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis - learning difficulties - Vulnerable adult I think if you just want a simple way to keep in "touch", this is the ticket!
