TED Podcast Extras – Fire

Fire Safety and Elder Safety is something to think about this time of year. Daylight savings time changes for fall use to be in October now it is November, and everyone has heard that you should check or replace you batteries in your smoke detectors. Well how about doing yourself or someone you love a favor and replace that battery with a Lithium 9V Battery. These are designed to work for up to 10 years instead of 1 or 2 like Alkaline batteries and they are leak resistant so they don't damage your detector. Another thing to do is test your smoke detectors monthly, mark this on your calendar. That way you always know your safe and you get into a routine. Never hurts to get used to the sound so whenever it may go off you know what it is and what to do. If you find the detector you have is not loud enough because we all have hearing loses as we get older, change to one that also has the feature of Talking and smoke and carbon Monoxide Alarms. I was a volunteer fireman for 4 years in Westport, WA and had lot of chances to see fires where the smoke detectors were missing or batteries missing or way past replacement time.
