TED Podcast Extras – Salute to Veterans

This is a Salute to Veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 and the 1st World War or “the war to end all wars”. Armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany. One year following President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th the Armistice Day commemoration and this being the 95th year since with the end to "The Great War" as it was known officially, ending with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. It became a Federal Holiday in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War it was known as Veterans Day in 1954 and in 1968 a bill passed to set it as the 4th Monday in October. Later changed in 1975 to what we now celebrate on that day or the closest Friday or Monday as a celebration to ALL Veterans of ALL Wars. Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate Veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th. Canada - Remembrance Day, Britain - Remembrance Sunday. Throughout Europe they observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. As this is a Technology Podcast so I thought I would list some of the advancements coming out of war and it's Veterans. WAR TECH: - Velcro for paratroopers. - Kevlar bullet proof material. - Night Vision Goggles at the end of World War II. - GPS global position system. - Gortex as a lightweight jacket. - Jet Engines. - Spy Satellites. - Missiles. - Radar. - X-Ray machines. - NASA from the Cold War. - Software. - Encryption. - Super Glue. - Atomic Bombs whether good or bad. - Communications equipment. - Medicines. - Synthetic Fuels. - Sonar. These are just a few of the many things coming out of war and used or produced by Veterans. Being a Veteran myself of the Vietnam Era as part of the United States Coast Guard I do observe on this 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month a two minute silence during my podcast for ALL those Veterans past and present.
