Revelation 15 & 16 – The Seven Plagues… Revelation 15:1-8 NIV – I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. 2 And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and its image and over the number of its name. They held harps given them by God 3 and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations. 4 Who will not fear you, Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” 5 After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law—and it was opened. 6 Out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues. They were dressed in clean, shining linen and wore golden sashes around their chests. 7 Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. John sees another great and marvelous sign. Seven Angels with Seven Plagues or Bowl Judgments that are quick, consecutive and fatal. John sees what looks like a sea of glass glowing with fire… the never ending Judgment of God that’s coming. And standing beside the sea, are those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. God gives them harps… and they sing Praises to God! They sang the song of Moses… and the song of the Lamb. • Song of Moses – The song of deliverance from Egypt and God’s defeat of the Egyptian army at the Red sea. • Song of the Lamb – The song of deliverance from evil and Satan! AND, restoration to a Holy God through the Lamb! Chuck Swindoll makes this point about the song of Moses and the Lamb. Both songs deal with the execution of an enemy; the expectation of the Children of God, and the exalting of the LORD GOD! Verse 5-8 – John sees the open Temple. In Heaven God and Christ are the TEMPLE! (Rev. 21:22) He sees the Holy of Holies… Angels coming from the God, the Temple. And one of the four living creatures around the throne gives them seven golden bowls. The Bowls were filled with God’s wrath… Wrath that will be poured out on the Antichrist, False Prophet and all his followers as well as the earth. Vs. 8 – And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed. • The smoke represents the Glory and power of God! (Is. 6) • And no one enters the temple… It’s as if all of Heaven stops because of the final judgment of God. • This shows the “severity and finality” of God’s wrath and judgment… it also shows how compassionate God is. Chapter 16: Seven Plagues/Bowl Judgments: These mirror some of the plagues God brought on the Egyptians when Moses commanded him to let the Hebrew people go. These are very similar to the Trumpet Judgments. (Rev. 8 – 9) 1. Trumpet judgments were partial… Bowl judgments complete and final. 2. The Trumpet judgements gave unbelievers an opportunity to repent… In the Bowl judgments the time for repentance is over. 3. Mankind is “indirectly affected” by the Trumpet Judgements… Bowl judgments “directly affect” mankind. 4. The Seven Plagues/Bowl Judgments are rapid and consecutive… poured out on the Antichrist, False Prophet and those who have chosen to follow them.
