Road Map to Freedom… Prayer and Worship. Last week Bill shared about Prayer. Prayer and Worship different sides of the same coin! * What is Worship? * Why are we supposed to Worship? * How do we Worship? What is Worship? The English word "worship" comes from two Old English words that means Worthiness or Worth-ship. It literally means to show (express) or give WORTH, VALUE to something or someone. John Piper - “True worship is when we value or treasure God above all things.” John MacArthur – “Our innermost being responding with praise for all that God is, through our attitudes, actions, thoughts, words, based on the truth of God as He has revealed Himself.” Jesus said, Matthew 15:8–9 - “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. “Vain” means, useless or with no results... Our Worship is useless, it means “nothing” if our heart isn’t in it and our teachings are “human rules” not God’s commands! Jesus gave us the definition of Worship with the Woman at the well. John 4:23–24 - “The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” So, What is Worship? Worship is a Heart and a Head issue. Heart (Spirit) = I’m all in! All my Attention, Affection, Abilities and Assets fully and absolutely committed, and devoted to God, for God! Head (Truth) = An accurate view of God! Why? Because our view of God determines everything... IF we don’t KNOW Him or we have an inaccurate view of Him then what will we worship?! We create an idol, some god that’s not God at all! IF I’m not all in, (Spirit) and I don’t have an accurate view of God (Truth) our worship will be in vain! Worthless and useless! Why Worship? We were created to Worship. God created Adam and Eve and all Humans with a capacity for Worshipping HIM! Satan destroyed that relationship because he wanted Man’s worship! The issue isn’t IF we Worship... we all do. The issue is the “object” of our worship. God is God! His “worth” is infinite, far beyond anything we can understand or comprehend. HE is our Creator and Designer! Look at what we’ve just learned (going through the Gospel)… * God Created… Designed all things. * Man Fell, * God Rescued, and Redeemed us from satan, sin, self. * Jesus Reconciles, Restores us to God God the Son, (Jesus) stepped down from the throne of Heaven, came to live as flesh and blood to show us how to live… then He was crucified as God’s sacrifice and ours… for all sin. He did that for us so we would be Reconciled and Restored to God! THAT ALONE SHOULD BE REASON TO WORSHIP, TO SHOW HIM WORTH AND VALUE AND TREASURE HIM ABOVE ALL ...
