溪流、颱風與天敵,武陵河烏的生命節律

在台灣,平均每年有3到4個颱風侵擾。對多數人而言,這往往意味著災害;但對七家灣溪的河烏來說,颱風卻是生命節律的一部分。

河烏是山區溪流的指標生物,能潛入激流捕食水棲昆蟲與小型魚類。屏科大野保所助理教授洪孝宇自2004年起在武陵地區的七家灣溪展開調查,20多年來透過繫放與記錄,逐漸拼湊出一幅颱風與溪流生態間的複雜關係圖。

研究初期的一項發現,源自2005年的艾利颱風。風災過後,七家灣溪原本的河烏幾乎全數失蹤,洪孝宇老師循線追查,最後在鄰近的有勝溪找到了牠們。進一步分析,由於有勝溪集水區較小、洪水相對平緩,因此成為了河烏的避難據點,而這種行為也在往後多次颱風中得到驗證。

洪孝宇老師還觀察到一個關鍵:決定河烏繁殖成敗的,往往不是颱風的大小,而是侵襲的「時間點」。這是因為河烏在入冬後進入繁殖季,如果颱風來得太晚,水棲昆蟲根本來不及在入冬之前恢復族群數量。一旦食物供應出了斷層,河烏的繁殖也會遭受衝擊。
