Raising and Teaching Black Sons To Stay Alive

Headlines have been spreading like wild-fire with images of unarmed black men being killed by white police officers. Not for doing something wrong, but for simply being black. The questions hanging among many parents and individuals are many including - How then do I raise my black sons to stay alive and not end up in a casket or under concrete? Behind every fact is a face. Behind every statistic is a story. Behind every catch phrase is a young person whose future will be lost if something is not done immediately to change his or her reality. And when it comes to young African American men, the numbers are staggering and the reality is sobering. Nationally, African American male students in grades K-12 were nearly 2½ times as likely to be suspended from school in 2000 as white students. The majority of the 2.3 million people incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails are people of color, people with mental health issues and drug addiction, people with low levels of educational attainment, and people with a history of unemployment or underemployment. Dr. Bernard Reese, Educator, Diversion & Inclusion Specialist, is an affluent African American and Community leader who is better equipped to share wisdom, ideas and advise on raising black sons in America. Dr. Reese is a native of Queens, New York. He is married to Mrs. Sandra D. Reese of Worcester, Massachusetts and is the father of five grown children; two sons and three daughters. He is the author of “Hope in the midst of Hopelessness”. In addition to serving as pastor of Framingham Church of God in Christ in Framingham, MA. Dr. Reese is currently serving as assistant principal at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, Massachusetts. He is also currently serving as adjunct professor at Worcester State University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he teaches a graduate course titled: “Teaching to Diversity in Education.” He is a former teacher of mathematics with the State of Massachusetts, possessing certifications in middle and high school mathematics.
