2022 August 03 - Halo of the Cat's Eye

In today's image, we see an example of a planetary nebula. This is the end state of a star much like our own Sun. The core has collapsed down to a white dwarf star while the outer layers have been expelled out into space. In this case, we are trying to understand the outer halo of the nebula to see what that tells us about the origins of these nebulae.
