Episode #113: The Candidates — Minus 4 — Head East

Forget about whether or not Iowa is unrepresentative of the nation.  Think instead of the drama it presented on caucus night: a Democratic contest that couldn't be closer, a Republican race where the frontrunner was knocked off his perch by a conservative true believer and almost caught by a third candidate.  Neal Conan joins the program for his monthly visit to sum up the meaning of Iowa -- and look ahead to New Hampshire. One candidate who once had dreams of being president was Gary Bauer, a Republican who made appeals to religious conservatives in 2000.  Sixteen years after his campaign failed, Bauer describes what he had hoped to do back then, and how the evangelical vote has grown since Pat Robertson's own bid in 1988. And with the passing of Vincent "Buddy" Cianci, the longtime former mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, we are reminded of what a power and influence he was on the city ... and how corrupt and vindictive he could be at the same time.  Darrell West of the Brookings Institution, an authority on Rhode Island, offers his observations about Cianci's legacy.
