Spotify Matchfire is celebrating 25 years, and for a San Luis Obispo-based agency, its reach has been anything but small. In Part One of this special Up+Adam Matchfire Monday conversation, Matchfire President Joey Leslie and Executive Creative Director Lea Brandy join Adam to talk about how a company rooted in SLO CAL grew from the early days of eBay, online fundraising, and digital community into an agency working with major brands, nonprofits, and organizations around the world.
The conversation gets into what has actually changed in marketing over the last 25 years, and what has not. Joey talks about the early internet, finding community online, building campaigns around purpose, and the difference between meaningful social impact and what he calls "cause washing." Lea digs into emotional connection, strategy, creative judgment, and what happens when AI can generate more content than anyone could ever use. One of the lines that lands hardest in the episode may also be one of the best ways to describe the moment marketing is in right now: when creation becomes almost free, taste becomes more valuable.
This isn’t just a 25th anniversary victory lap. It is a conversation about trust, technology, creativity, attention, purpose, and how a company can do ambitious work for national and global clients while staying deeply connected to the community it calls home.
