A 15-year-old girl named Lily Parker and her younger brother Tom go missing, possibly stranded in the fly-speck desert town of Nathgari, out near the Australian outback in a period of sweltering heat in which the chance of survival grows dimmer by the day. Their parents, Catherine and Matthew, have been troubled in their marriage in recent years, and now find themselves having further difficulty trusting each other even when united in trying to find their kids. Meanwhile, wounds that have never quite healed during the family's distressing past get ripped open once again, as Lily's promiscuity, Catherine's denials, and Matthew's bottled-up rage all surface yet again in ways that makes an already tense situation boil over to the point where they may all be consumed, with their only hope being Rae, the local cop with problems of his own, out to put all of the pieces of the sordid puzzle together to find thee kids before it's too late.
