Phoenix (2015) Nina Hoss, Christian Petzold - Movie Review

Nina Hoss plays Nelly Lenz, a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp in World War II. The nightmarish experience has left her face mutilated to the point where reconstructing it back to how it was proves nearly impossible, though the surgeon does the best he can. Returning back to her native Berlin in 1945, Nelly looks to be reunited her beloved husband Johnny (Zehrfeld), who busses at a nightclub called Phoenix, but her friend Lene feels that Johnny is no good, selling her out as a Jew (which she isn't) to the Nazis for his own devices. When she finds and approaches Johnny, he doesn't recognize her as Nelly, thinking her another woman who happens to resemble his ex-wife in enough respects that he comes up with a plan -- for her to pretend to be Nelly in order to retrieve her sizable inheritance that they will split among themselves. Nelly goes along with the ruse in order to get closer to Johnny, hoping he'll eventually see her for who she truly is, and also hoping he doesn't turn out to be the man Lene says he truly is.
