This is Renegade Files Episode 121, When Myths Materialize: The Rake, Mermaids, and Doppelgangers.
As children, most of us probably had at least a few experiences of fear in a dark room at night. As you stare, the clothes in your closet take on hideous shapes of specters. Close your eyes, and things only get worse; ghouls, demons, and devilish beasts beset you.
It seems we come pre-programmed with these images… monsters who travel across the collective subconscious to populate our nightmares. The more we try to look away, the worse they become. This can be particularly troubling for creative kids with vivid imaginations.
And the only advice we’re given? “It’s not real” “It’s just your imagination.” “Go back to sleep.”
But even Albert Einstein told us that Imagination is more important than knowledge, because every invented and created wonderment of the human world has been first born in someone’s imagination.
This ability to imagine is the ability to conjure.
But when we, as a species, share perennial unexplained experiences, we tend to place these in categories that occupy a higher place than mere imagination.
This lofty realm of the paranormal is called myth. And myth is not the same thing as fiction. A myth is a functional thematic summary of the extraordinary, the transcendent, and the supernatural. Myth is not, as western science might describe, a primitive attempt at explanation, but rather, it’s the very narrative of a complex interrelationship between our societal paradigms, and the unexplainable experiences that shape them.
And in this shadow realm of Myth, there be Monsters.
