Ringside Politics – December 17th, 2020

Welcome to another edition of Ringside Politics with Jeff Crouere

Today’s Hot Topics:

1) One day after the Electoral College affirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential victory, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, said in an interview that he acknowledged Biden as the president-elect and believed the election was legitimate.

At the same time, Johnson plans to hold a Senate hearing Wednesday on election “irregularities,” saying there are “legitimate questions” about the way the election was administrated in Wisconsin and other states.

“All I’m trying to do is hold a very upfront, straightforward hearing talking about what controls there are in place, what fraud does occur, what can we do to prevent fraud in the future,” said Johnson in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Johnson contended there are unanswered questions about the election process.

2) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said the Democratic Party needs new leadership during an interview that aired Wednesday.

During a new podcast with The Intercept, Ocasio-Cortez said "I mean, I think so," when asked directly whether it’s time for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to be replaced.

Ocasio-Cortez, who hasn't been shy in criticizing members of her own party, hit the Democratic leadership with one of her most direct criticisms in the interview.

She also said Democrats have failed to create a succession plan for when older leaders like Pelosi and Schumer do step aside.

3) The Trump campaign lost its Nevada court case, but questions it raised about Nevada’s election system remain unanswered.

On Tuesday, the Nevada Supreme Court rejected the Trump campaign’s election appeal. In one of its filings, the Trump campaign noted it had less than three hours to submit its supplemental brief.

Democrats hailed this as validation of the integrity of Nevada’s election. The Trump campaign “never once presented sufficient evidence of widespread fraud,” Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford tweeted. “Yes, they spouted nonsense in the media. But they never backed it up in court.”

4) Texas, backed by nine other states, filed a lawsuit against Alphabet-owned Google on Wednesday, accusing it of breaking antitrust law in how it runs its online advertising business.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had joined the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against the company in October.

“Google repeatedly used its monopolistic power to control pricing (and) engage in market collusion to rig auctions in a tremendous violation of justice,” Paxton said in a Facebook video.

Google “eliminated its competition and crowned itself the king of online advertising,” he added.
