Welcome to another edition of Ringside Politics with Jeff Crouere
Today’s Hot Topics:
1) Undercutting President Donald Trump on multiple fronts, Attorney General William Barr said Monday he saw no reason to appoint a special counsel to look into the president’s claims about the 2020 election or to name one for the tax investigation of President-elect Joe Biden’s son.
Barr, in his final public appearance as a member of Trump’s Cabinet, also reinforced the belief of federal officials that Russia was behind a massive hack of U.S. government agencies, not China as the president has suggested.
Barr is leaving the Justice Department this week, having morphed from one of Trump’s most loyal allies to one of the few members of the Cabinet willing to contradict the president openly. That’s been particularly true since the election, with Barr declaring in an interview with The AP that he had seen no evidence of widespread voting fraud, even as Trump continued to make false claims about the integrity of the contest.
2) Hunter Biden’s ex-business associate Tony Bobulinski accused Democratic nominee Joe Biden of lying about his involvement in his family’s overseas dealings in a stunning appearance just 90 minutes before Thursday evening’s presidential debate.
“I have heard Joe Biden say he has never discussed his dealings with Hunter. That is false. I have firsthand knowledge about this because I directly dealt with the Biden family, including Joe Biden,” Bobulinski said following The Post’s bombshell reporting on Hunter Biden’s private emails.
Bobulinski, who will be a guest of President Trump at the debate, showed three phones spanning 2015 to 2018 as evidence and said he would be meeting with the Senate and the FBI to hand over electronics.
3) Casting himself in the role of Christmas Grinch, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is chastising Democrats and Republicans alike who support a roughly $900 billion corona virus relief package that officials argue is sorely needed to help the staggering economy.
Paul is opposing the new relief package and deriding Congress for handing out "free money" as the federal government's national debt keeps climbing.
"This bill is free money for everyone," he said in a speech on the Senate floor Monday afternoon. "And yet, if free money were the answer, if money really grew on trees, why not give more free money? Why not give it out all the time?
"Why stop at $600 a person? Why not $1,000? Why not $2,000? If we can print up money with impunity, why not do it?"
4) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday slammed the White House's most recent stimulus proposal as ignoring key economic issues wrought by the corona virus pandemic, defending her decision to turn down what she described as a political stunt that would fail to help the public.
"All of my colleagues -- we represent these people, I have for over 30 years represented my constituents," Pelosi told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room." "I know what their needs are, I listen to them, and their needs are not addressed in the President's proposal." When asked whether she could avoid letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, Pelosi replied, "I will not let the wrong be the enemy of the right." Pelosi's comments come after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Senate Republicans will attempt to move forward on a "targeted" corona virus relief bill when the Senate returns to session next week -- a sign that prospects for broad stimulus agreement have all but faded before Election Day.Today’s Guests:
