Gardening in October | What To Do

Hey Neighbor! October is one of the BEST months to be in the garden, especially if you’re gardening in Zone 9! Cooler temperatures are moving in, the soil is still warm, and there’s plenty you can plant now for fall, winter, and even spring harvests.

In this episode, Greg breaks down what to plant in October and the garden tasks you don’t want to forget.

???? WHAT TO PLANT IN OCTOBER:

• Carrots, beets, radishes, turnips & rutabagas

• Broccoli, cauliflower & cabbage

• Collards, kale & mustard greens

• Kohlrabi & bok choy

• Lettuce, spinach & Swiss chard

• Cilantro, dill & parsley

• Garlic, shallots & multiplier onions

• English peas, sugar snap peas & snow peas

• Pansies, violas, snapdragons, calendula & dianthus

???? We’ll also talk about getting your beds ready for short-day onions coming later this fall.

October isn’t just about planting! Now is also a great time to:

• Divide and transplant perennials

• Plant trees and shrubs

• Add mulch to regulate soil temperature and moisture

• Adjust your watering as temperatures cool

• Keep an eye out for lingering pests and diseases

• Keep newly seeded beds consistently moist during warm fall afternoons

Plus, we’re featuring this week’s Garden Spotlight from Steve Hoermann and our Bobblehead shoutout goes to @monkeyfoodgarden!

Whether you’re starting your fall garden or wondering what you should be doing in the garden this month, we’ve got you covered.
