SCH 115 Six Self-Care Hacks I Learned from Sea Otters

Have you ever learned from sea otters or other species? This month on the podcast, I’ll share what I’ve learned about self-care from the animal kingdom.

Yep. I’ve Learned from Sea Otters

Despite Solomon’s advice in Proverbs to study ants, many of us don’t spend a lot of time observing nature and applying the lessons we learn to our lives. I’ve discovered when I have a camera in my hands, I become more observant. Instead of just looking and passing by, I stop and try to find the perfect shot. In seeking the perfect shot, I often notice something about the animal I had never noticed before.

By the time I spend hours processing the thousands of photos I take, I feel like I’ve discovered valuable insights into the human condition. Has this ever happened to you? Whether looking through binoculars or sorting through photos, do you learn from sea otters and other creatures?

I saw my first sea otter at a small Seattle aquarium back in high school. But I didn’t really learn anything from sea otters until our first trip to Alaska seven years ago. I didn’t realize sea otters were so long and heavy. We often just see the tip of the iceberg (their cute faces and hands). When I watched them frolic on the back of a yacht, I finally understood their true dimensions. We’ll call this a bonus lesson on what I learned from sea otters. Like people, sea otters have depth we seldom see. Maybe I should spend more time observing people, too.

What have you learned from nature lately? I’d love to hear about it in the comments section.
