St. Louis Post-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Thursday to talk about the latest he’s hearing on the Cardinals’ search for an outfielder. Read some excerpts and listen to the complete interview below: What’s the latest you’re hearing on the Cardinals’ search for an outfielder? I asked (Cardinals GM John Mozeliak) a few minutes ago…would you rather just spend money on an outfielder (as opposed to trading for one)? It’s at that point where, if they want a player that’s going to make a difference, it’s going to have to hurt. They’re not going to be really pleased with the deal.” Do you see them signing or trading for a player? “That’s a good question. I don’t even think Mozeliak has an answer at this point. My feel is the better options remain through trade. They just do.” Is that because they don’t like free agent outfielder Dexter Fowler? “I feel they like Dexter Fowler for 2017 and 2018. But I think there’s concern (he might not be as productive for $17 million a year in 2019 and 2020). And Fowler might not be interested in playing in St. Louis.” Have you heard that Fowler doesn’t want to come to St. Louis because it’s “no fun”? From @dgoold: There are some guys—and maybe Fowler is one of them—that wants a different atmosphere than the #STLCards create. — Tim McKernan (@tmckernan) December 8, 2016 “I’ve heard the ‘No fun’ thing. I don’t know if that came from Heyward or not. But to be blunt…Matheny tried to bring more fun to spring training…and that’s how that started. If Heyward left because he…felt like this place wasn’t (for him). What role does the clubhouse (and the manager) play in wooing a guy? We can all list guys who had no interest in playing for Tony La Russa because of his reputation. But there were guys who wanted to play for La Russa. You have a lot of factors playing in. I get it. If Fowler has a personal reason…I’d rather hear it from them than a second or third source guessing.” What do you think it would take for the Cardinals to trade for Lorenzo Cain? “It would be a guy who they have on the cusp of the MLB or have arrived…and someone with a lot of years of team control. For an everyday player for one year, you’re talking about a top 50, a top 75 prospect. That’s a Luke Weaver type. And somebody else.” Is there any way you see the Cardinals trading Alex Reyes? “No, I don’t.” From @dgoold: I do not believe there is anyway Alex Reyes is with any organization other than the #STLCards come Spring Training. — Tim McKernan (@tmckernan) December 8, 2016 From @dgoold: If the #STLCards don't have the artillery to get Blackmon, then they may have to look for a stopgap. A one-year solution. — Tim McKernan (@tmckernan) December 8, 2016
