Mizzou’s Odom says he’ll “provide another set of eyes” to improve defense

University of Missouri head football coach Barry Odom joined The Press Box on Monday discuss a number of improvements the team needs to make following its Homecoming Weekend upset loss to Middle Tennessee State. PowerMizzou’s DeArmond: “Something has to change” with Tigers’ defense after loss to Middle Tenn. Read a couple excerpts and listen to the interview below: What has your life been like following that disappointing loss? “With the game unfolding the way that it did…Saturday night after the game, I addressed the team, did my media responsibilities…ended up probably an hour or so after that was over, I got a chance to see my family…and spent some time with them. They were disappointed as anybody about the loss. They said, ‘Dad, you got to go back to work,’ so I did. I got busy evaluating what happened and trying to come up with solutions to get it fixed. I then got started on Sunday morning with Kentucky preparations.” Any updates on Micheal Scherer’s injury status? “They’re doing a view more evaluations today…I’m kind of keeping my fingers crossed to see what happens.” What changes do you expect to make to improve the defense? “I’ve got to help that side of the ball. I’ve got to provide another set of eyes…and provide help where I can. It’s going to be all hands on deck to get it fixed. We’re going to work together this week to…put together a plan we think can be successful. I’m anxious to help out.” Can you explain the difference between the read and react philosophy you’ve installed and the vertical attacking defense the line had been used to before this year? “At times, defensively upfront we’re doing a combination (of a read and react defense and an attacking defense). We’re doing what our guys can do…there’s times we’re asking our guys to read the blocking scheme, there are times where we’re asking them to attack vertical up field. We’re going to have to simplify it a little bit (and play to our hand and our advantage as much as we can).”
