Sin Was Never a Courtroom — It's a Corrupted Mind About Your Worth | Who Told You That? | Chad Belew
For weeks we've been tracing where our picture of God actually came from — and last week we named the framework most of us inherited: penal substitutionary atonement, where sin is a legal problem, God is a judge, and Jesus absorbs the punishment we owe. This week Chad asks the question that was left hanging: if that's not it, what does Jesus actually say the human problem is? The answer reframes not just how you think about sin, but how you think about yourself. Sin, at its root, isn't a law broken — it's a corrupted mindset that makes us see ourselves and others as worth less than God says we are. The behavior is always downstream of the lie. And the solution Jesus offers isn't a legal transaction; it's metanoia — a changed mind, a restored vision, learning to see yourself the way the One who loves you already does.
In this episode:
- The judge vs. the doctor: why Jesus shows up to diagnose a condition, not issue a verdict
- "Hamartia" — how the word we translate "sin" originally meant missing the mark, not committing a crime
- How one mistranslated Latin preposition in Augustine turned inherited corruption into inherited guilt — and rewired the whole Western framework
- A working definition: sin as a corrupted mindset about worth, and how that same lie scales up into systems like racism, abuse, addiction, and people-pleasing
- The woman caught in adultery and the prodigal son, reread: Jesus refusing the courtroom and restoring identity instead
- "Metanoia" — change your mind, come home — and the closing question: what's the lie underneath the worst version of yourself?
