My name is Patrick McGilvray, and I’m the host of The Running Mind Podcast! I’m an experienced marathoner, ultrarunner, running coach, and master mindset coach. I’m passionate about two things – long-distance running and mindset. I think a lot of people don’t fully understand what the word “mindset” really means. When I talk about mindset, what I’m talking about is developing the kind of mental toughness you need to be able to accomplish your running goals. Whenever I ask a runner why they weren’t able to hit their goal, they don’t mention their training program, or their nutrition, or even the weather. They say it’s because they didn’t have the right mindset. They might call it a lack of confidence, or not believing in themselves, or voices in their head telling them to quit. It’s all the same thing – a negative mindset that’s working against them. Running is hard enough without your mind fighting you every step of the way! So how do you develop the right mindset? How do you quiet those inner voices? How do you get more confidence? How do you learn to master your inner game so your mind is working for you instead of against you? That’s exactly why I created The Running Mind Podcast. Each episode will feature interviews with athletes of all levels, from professional runners to weekend warriors, to learn how they’ve mastered the mindset of running, so you can too! I’ll also feature in-depth conversations with other experts in the fields of mindset and fitness so you can learn how to train your mind and train your body to become the best all-around runner you can be. You’ll hear from people like Ian Burrell, a 2:13 marathoner who shares his amazing experience of running at the World Championships in Beijing and how he mentally prepares for elite events like that. You’ll hear from Melanie Owen, a middle-of-the-pack runner who fell in love with ultras and eventually found herself at Badwater 135. We talked about the mental fortitude it takes to complete the world’s toughest foot race. You’ll hear from my friend Caroline Keating who tried for years to qualify for Boston and could never put it all together until she finally got her mind right… and what happened when she did.
