New York City WIFI – WOT 225

This week on The Waves of Tech 225, we explore the news that FedEx is changing their pricing structure, the deal between AT&T and DirecTV, online home improvement options, New York City WiFi, and Nielsen's Twitter TV rating system.  Man, that is a lot to discuss and we enjoy every second of it.  Enjoy the show. NO SHOW NEXT WEEK With Memorial Day next weekend, we will be taking the week to enjoy time with friends and family as well as remember and honor those that have lost their lives protecting our nation. FedEx: Change in pricing structure (http://www.ecommercebytes.com/cab/abn/y14/m05/i13/s04); Dimensional charging (http://www.logisticsmgmt.com/article/fedex_announces_price_changes_for_its_ground_and_freight_offerings) FedEx is about to change the e-commerce industry.  FedEx announced that dimensional shipping charging (12x8x10 box) will be implemented as of January 2015.  This puts online giants, such as EBay and Amazon, and consumers on notice that shipping costs may skyrocket.  FedEx believes that space, rather than weight, is a better measure to balance revenues and expenses. AT&T and DirecTV Boards agree to merger (http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/05/18/att-buys-directv/9247795/); Regulatory (http://www.cnet.com/news/regulatory-approval-for-at-tdirectv-may-hinge-on-the-bundle/) It is difficult to stomach the news that the Board of Directors for AT&T and DirecTV have agreed to a merger, a big time loss for the consumer.  This, of course, comes only months after the Comcast/TWC deal was announced.  Here at , we are adamantly opposed to the merger for strong and reasonable grounds, including lack of competition, limited bundling options, AT&T false “commitments”, and customer service history.  Ultimately, the merger is a horrible deal for consumers. Pro.com (https://pro.com/) - Online Home Project To-Do List (https://www.yahoo.com/tech/pro-com-tells-you-how-much-those-home-repairs-youve-85569824119.html) The world wide web has allowed many of us to use online resources to learn about home improvements and that in turn has saved us money.  Now there is Pro.com (https://pro.com/), a service when you can add a home improvement to-do list and have a contractor come right to your door to fix your house!  The website offers certification of contractors and instant pricing. Old NY Phone Booths now WiFi HotSpots (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/city-expand-free-wifi-transforming-pay-phones-hotspots-article-1.1788374#bmb=1) New York City has always be a leading in technological innovation.  In an effort to keep the city at the forefront of domestic and international business and address the economic realities facing many poor families, NYC is converting nearly 7,300 old phone booths into WiFi hotspots in an effort to provide free access to millions that can not afford it.  What a great way of utilizing existing infrastructure and modernize what has become an eyesore on the streets. Nielsen’s Twitter TV Ratings Now Identify The Age And Gender Of Those Tweeting About TV (http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/19/nielsens-twitter-tv-ratings-now-identify-the-age-and-gender-of-those-tweeting-about-tv-or-just-lurking/) Twitter is unquestionably an amazing platform for data.  Nielsen is now compiling age-based and gender-based demographics as it relates to TV.  They are gathering data to show what genders are tweeting, reading, and sharing thoughts on a variety of TV series, including dramas, comedies, sporting events, and reality TV.  We can expect to see an influx of money into the advertising industry as these data points prove very valuable.
