N029 Smith and Jones

Identical cousins, rhino police and a little old lady from space. We review Martha Jones' debut as The Tenth Doctor's new companion. * * * It turns out there's such a thing as identical cousins. Freema Agyeman who played Adeola Oshodi in Army of Ghosts reappears here as her cousin – and The Doctor's next companion – Martha Jones. Let's set the stage: Martha is a Doctor in spe at the Royal Hope Hospital in London, where coincidentally the Doctor has just admitted himself in order to investigate some plasma wibbly-wobbliness, and where a so-called Plasmavore, an alien being with the ability to camouflage its innards by consuming the blood of others, is posing as a little old lady named Florence. Then all of a sudden the hospital is "H2O-scooped" to the Moon, apparently neutral ground, by the Judoon, a race of space rhinos who act as bounty hunters/mercenaries/police-for-hire. Yep, all of that actually happens. Have a listen to our review, as we tear this enjoyable, although at times ridiculously childish, episode a new one, while closely scrutinising Martha Jones' first appearance as Tennant's new companion! Oh, and stop by WhoBackWhen.com/n029-smith-and-jones/ and enjoy the screenshots from 'Smith and Jones' as well, paying particular attention to the (over)reactions of the patients upon finding themselves on the moon... PLUS – Thanks, Drew, for pointing this out – a pic of Anne Reid (Florence Finnegan / Plasmavore / little old lady from space) in a previous appearance on Doctor Who, in The Curse of Fenric. * * * Check out WHOBACKWHEN.COM for more information, Doctor Who TV Serial and Audiobook reviews, ratings and ramblings, and loads more podcast episodes.
