“Scrambling and Chaos” at Medical Points with Dr. Kahler a...

On today’s special pledge drive show, we start the show with a conversation with UW-Madison student Shafiq from the group Students for Justice in Palestine. He joins us to talk about a viral video from a February 18th lecture given by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) special unit commander Oz Bin-Nun. The event was hosted at the Rohr Chabad House by UW Chabad, an independent organization from UW-Madison.

Then, we turn our attention to two doctors who provided care in Gaza at the beginning of the year. Dr. John Kahler and Dr. Thaer Ahmad join us to explain the persistent illnesses and injuries, the lack of resources, and the issues they saw first hand in hospitals and on the ground.

Dr. Thaer Ahmad is a board certified emergency medicine physician at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Thaer also serves as the Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Advocate Christ and the Global Health Director for the emergency department at Advocate Christ. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois, and a board member of MedGlobal a medical humanitarian NGO that works in Gaza. He has been to Gaza, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Kenya, and Greece as apart of projects that focus on strengthening local healthcare capacity. Dr. John Kahler is a general pediatrician and the Latin America Regional Director for MedGlobal, which he helped establish in 2017. He is a recipient of  the Red Cross Disaster Services Hero Award. Dr. Kahler was Regional Medical Director for a large Federally Qualified Health Center in Chicago and became its Chief Medical Officer. For 25 years, he has had an interest in global health and has participated in humanitarian work around the world from Mexico to Haiti to Tanzania. In 2016, he dedicated his time to the Syrian diaspora in Jordan, Lebanon and Greece. With his mentor and MedGlobal cofounder, Dr Zaher Sahloul, in July 2016, he was in Aleppo, Syria as the siege was completed. After returning from Syria, Dr Kahler retired from clinical work to dedicate his time building a humanitarian organization concerned with the needs of the displaced and desperate.
