023. Relocation Depression: You Might Have to go Where the Jobs Are | Veterans & First Responders

Your Next Objective podcast Round 23, addresses preparing for the possibility that your next career may require a move. You’ll hear why location should be part of your transition planning, how employment markets can affect your options, and why these conversations need to happen with your family before you’re under pressure to make a decision.

Relocation can become one of the hardest parts of military and first responder career transition. You might have the experience, leadership skills, training, and work ethic employers want, but that doesn’t mean the right job will be waiting in the city where you currently live.

At some point, you may have to decide what matters more: staying where you’re comfortable or moving to where the strongest career opportunities are.

That decision isn’t simple. Your family may have roots in the community. Your kids may be settled in school. Your spouse may have a career of their own. You may have spent years building friendships, routines, and a sense of belonging. The idea of starting over somewhere else can bring fear, frustration, guilt, and even depression before your transition has begun.

But refusing to consider relocation doesn’t make the problem disappear. If the work you want isn’t available where you live, limiting your search to one location could also limit your income, career growth, and long-term satisfaction after service.

This isn’t about telling you that you have to leave your home. It’s about making sure you’re honest about what your future may require.

You’ve spent your career learning to assess the situation, understand the mission, and adjust when conditions change. Your transition deserves the same level of preparation. The sooner you explore possible locations, career opportunities, family concerns, and financial realities, the more control you’ll have when it’s finally time to choose what comes next.
