025. Fix Problems. Don’t Continue or Add to Them | Veterans & First Responders
Your Next Objective podcast Round 25, addresses why problem-solving is one of the most valuable skills you can develop while you’re still serving. You’ll learn why identifying a deficiency is only the beginning, how working within limited manpower, budgets, policies, and authority can strengthen your leadership skills, and why organizations value people who can move from criticism to practical solutions.
You’re trained to deal with problems. In the military, fire service, law enforcement, corrections, EMS, and other first responder careers, problems are part of the job. Something goes wrong, someone calls for help, and you’re expected to assess the situation, make decisions, and improve the outcome. But that same mindset doesn’t always carry over into the workplace.
It’s easy to become another voice criticizing a new policy, complaining about staffing, questioning promotions, pointing out inconsistent discipline, or talking about everything leadership is getting wrong. Some of those complaints might even be completely justified. The question is what you do after you recognize the problem. Do you keep talking about it, make it worse, or become someone who tries to solve it?
This matters beyond your current career. When your military or first responder transition eventually comes, civilian employers won’t only care about your title, rank, assignments, or years of service. They’ll want to know what happens when you encounter a problem. Can you evaluate it? Can you work with the resources you actually have? Can you communicate a solution? Can you make the organization better?
You don’t have to wait until transition to build that reputation.
Start becoming the person who fixes problems instead of continuing them or adding new ones.
