026. Age Considerations When Seeking Your Next Career | Veterans & First Responders
Your Next Objective podcast Round 26, addresses one of the realities that military members and first responders need to consider before leaving the profession: how your age and years of service can affect the way you approach your next career.
There’s a point in your military or first responder career when you realize your next career probably won’t begin at 25 or 30. You may enter the civilian workforce in your 40s or 50s with decades of leadership, responsibility, problem-solving, and real-world experience behind you. That experience has value. But experience alone won’t guarantee a successful career transition.
The goal isn’t to hide your age or pretend you’re younger than you are. It’s to make sure your experience doesn’t accidentally make you appear outdated, resistant to change, or overly attached to the way things were done in your previous career.
It’s about the importance of staying current with technology, why your resume needs to communicate where you’re going rather than simply documenting where you’ve been, and why adaptability may become one of your most important strengths during a career change.
Also, your next supervisor or manager may be considerably younger than you. They may have fewer years in the workforce, but they could have far more experience than you in the industry you’re entering. That doesn’t diminish what you’ve accomplished. It simply means you’re entering a different environment where you’ll need to learn new systems, new expectations, and sometimes new ways of being led.
Your age isn’t necessarily the problem. The question is whether you’re carrying your experience forward or allowing your experience to keep you anchored to the past.
