027. Turning Down Hypervigilance and Threat Scanning | Veterans & First Responders
Your Next Objective podcast Round 27, addresses hypervigilance during military and first responder career transition and why preparing for civilian employment requires more than translating your resume. The goal isn’t to eliminate situational awareness, but to control when you use it. Recognizing automatic threat responses, separating incompetence from intent, reducing unnecessary operational intensity, and developing a stronger collaboration mindset.
Hypervigilance can keep you alive in the military, law enforcement, fire service, and other high-risk careers. But when you eventually transition into the civilian workforce, the same threat-detection mindset that protected you on the job can quietly work against you.
You’ve spent years learning to read rooms, watch hands, identify exits, notice changes in behavior, and question what doesn’t look right. You might automatically choose the seat with your back against the wall or walk into an unfamiliar environment already evaluating what could go wrong. That awareness has value. The problem starts when operational awareness becomes your default setting everywhere you go.
A civilian workplace isn’t a tactical environment. A disorganized manager probably isn’t trying to undermine you. A coworker who communicates poorly might simply be inexperienced. An inefficient process isn’t necessarily evidence that nobody around you is competent. But if your nervous system and thought process are still operating at full intensity, everyday workplace problems can start looking like threats.
That can affect more than your stress level. It can change how people experience you. You may seem guarded, suspicious, overly intense, difficult to approach, or unwilling to trust people who haven’t yet earned your confidence.
You don’t need to become less aware. You need to become better at deciding what deserves your attention.
