Your Next Objective podcast Round 28, addresses why staying mentally and physically fit has to remain a priority throughout your career, not just when the job requires it. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and for many people in the military and first responder communities, that subject isn’t distant or abstract. You may have lost a friend, coworker, partner, or someone you served beside. You may have watched someone struggle long before anyone understood how much weight they were carrying.

Military members and first responders spend years preparing for the physical and mental demands of the job. But what happens when the job starts taking more from you than you realize? The point of this episode isn’t to tell you to simply tighten it up. It’s to remind you that resilience requires maintenance.

Your career may demand long hours, constant stress, physical wear, missed sleep, emotional control, and years of exposure to things most people will never experience. Those demands are real. But the job still can’t be allowed to consume your health, relationships, identity, or ability to function outside of it.

At some point, you’re going to leave the uniform behind. Whether that transition is years away or closer than you want to admit, the condition you’re in when you reach that point matters. You don’t want to spend your final years of service trying to repair damage that could’ve been addressed earlier.

Take care of your body. Pay attention to your mental health. Build strong relationships outside the job. Learn when to ask for help. Stay connected to people who know you beyond your title or position. Your transition doesn’t begin on your last day. It’s being shaped by how you take care of yourself right now.
