030. Nothing Is Permanent So Always Explore Other Options | Veterans & First Responders
Your Next Objective podcast Round 30 addresses why civilian transition planning shouldn’t begin when retirement, separation, or your last day on the job is already staring you in the face. You can be completely committed to what you’re doing today while still paying attention to where your organization, profession, and opportunities are heading.
You might love what you’re doing right now. You might have the assignment you wanted, be part of a great team, and feel like you’ve finally reached the place you worked years to get to. But if you’re in the military, law enforcement, fire service, or another first responder career, there’s something you can’t afford to forget: none of it is permanent.
Your assignment can change. Leadership can change. Your organization can change direction. Opportunities can disappear. And eventually, whether you’re ready or not, your military or first responder career is going to end.
That doesn’t mean you should constantly be looking for the exit. It means you should become better at recognizing what’s happening around you before everyone else sees it.
Your first post-service job might be a great opportunity, but it doesn’t have to be your final destination. Learn the organization. Build your skills. Develop relationships. Watch where your industry is moving. Position yourself for opportunities before you desperately need one.
