Your Next Objective Podcast Round 32, addresses civilian transition and how your reputation is being built long before your military or first responder career ends. And when it’s time to transition into your next career, the credibility you’ve earned will matter more than the stories you tell about yourself.

We’ve all worked around someone who seems to have done everything. Biggest operations. Toughest assignments. Most prestigious units. Somehow, they were always there, always involved, and always the person doing the most. At least, that’s how the story gets told. But people who actually worked beside you know the difference between experience and exaggeration.

Don’t Be All Smoke And Mirrors is about protecting your integrity, credibility, and professional reputation while you’re still serving. You don’t need the most impressive resume in the room to successfully transition from the military, law enforcement, fire service, or another first responder career. You need a record you can stand behind.

Take the difficult assignment when you can. Volunteer before someone has to ask. Step forward when your team needs another set of hands. Develop your skills. Seek responsibility. Do the work to the best of your ability, even when nobody’s keeping score.

But don’t claim experience you haven’t earned. Don’t inflate your role in an operation because it sounds better. Don’t build your future resume, interview answers, or professional identity around a version of yourself that your former teammates wouldn’t recognize. Your transition will eventually put you in rooms where your background has value. That makes your credibility even more important.

You don’t have to have done everything. You need to be able to honestly explain what you’ve done, what you’ve learned, what you can contribute, and why someone should trust you with what comes next.
