Why Has France Lost Its Romance?

The romantic image of Paris that dominated American culture for over a century is collapsing as widespread riots, arson, and looting have replaced the fantasy of the city of love. In October, student protests over school conditions and cost of living escalated into nationwide marches of approximately 550,000 people by Interior Ministry count, with 1,800 arrests. The New York Times reported that the French fantasy of Paris as an escape from the world's problems is coming to an end. For authors, particularly romance writers, this cultural shift carries real consequences: American readers no longer associate Paris with romance, and setting a love story there risks pulling readers out of the narrative. The decline began in the early 2000s when France opposed the Iraq War and Congress renamed French fries to freedom fries, but accelerated dramatically after the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony, which was widely perceived as mocking Christianity and Western civilization. Churches are reportedly burning across Europe with regularity, and the question of which European country will be the first to undergo a demographic and political transformation is reshaping how American audiences view the entire continent. Romance authors are now searching for the next Casablanca, a setting audiences know nothing about, to fill the void left by Paris.
