Final Space – Season 1 (2018)
In Final Space, an astronaut named Gary and his planet-destroying sidekick called Mooncake embark on serialized journeys through space in order to unlock the mystery of where the universe actually ends and if it actually does exist. I'm joined by my wife, Wendie, to discuss the first episode in the new TBS television series created by YouTuber Olan Rogers. Thanks for your podcast review! * None for this episode Announcements * Wendie and I are starting a new podcast called Lock, Schlock & Barrel...

Altered Carbon: Out of the Past (2018)
Altered Carbon is rated TV-MA and may not be suitable for everyone. Please use discretion when choosing to watch this episode or series. Netflix’s new show, Altered Carbon, is based on a 2002 book by Richard Morgan. This is the first book in the Takeshi Kovacs series. The other two novels are Broken Angels and Woken Furies. Fun fact, Richard Morgan wrote two Black Widow graphic novels - Homecoming (2005) and The Things They Say About Her (2006), wrote for the video games Crysis 2 and Syndicate. ...

Trailers from Big Game LII
This past weekend millions of people chose to watch two sports teams duke it out in hopes to take home some jewelry. I personally don’t pay any attention to sports of any kind - although I do wish dodgeball was a national past time - but I do know that the first Sunday in February means it’s time to watch some commercials. Particularly those that are TV spots for upcoming movies. For the first time ever in the history of Geek This, I’m going to be sharing my thoughts on what was shown during the...

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee
Jerry Seinfeld is a household name thanks to his TV show, Seinfeld, that ran from 1989-1998 on NBC. The show, if you haven’t seen it is about… nothing. Well, kind of. It’s based on a somewhat fictional version of Jerry and his friends, Elaine, George, and Kramer. There isn’t an overarching theme throughout the show, other than the gang finds themselves in some hilarious predicaments. It’s one of those things you just have to watch to understand. Well, anyway, thanks to the huge success from that...

Why Do I Hate DC Comics?
If you’ve listened to Geek This since the podcast started in 2012, you may have noticed a trend: we have rarely talked about DC Comics and DC Entertainment. It’s been brought to my attention by myself that maybe, just maybe I hate them. In fact, my loathing for DC has been brought up a couple of times with friends and I’ve never truly been able to explain why I might hate them. So, on this episode I want to explain my point of view and how I’m going to remedy the issue. I was born in 1987, so my...

Brian K Vaughan’s Paper Girls
Previously, in episode 77, I made a list of 12 pop culture things I wanted to check out in 2018. One item on that list was to read more comics that were not part of Marvel or DC. I was given several suggestions from you and I’m taking the time to dig into these books. Reviewing comics is one of the hardest thing for me on the podcast because, generally, people don’t have the access to comics the way they might a big-budget movie. I actually have to get my comics digitally because the closest com...

Revisiting YouTube Red
Back in episode 59 I gave my initial impression of YouTube’s premium “YouTube Red” service. Overall, I wasn’t impressed, but after a year and 20 episodes - and getting access to a new 3-month trial - I wanted to revisit the service and see what had changed and if it would become a regular part of my cord-cutting utilities. What is YouTube Red? To put it simply, Red is a premium service created by YouTube in order for them to do more specialized content with some of the top creators on the platfo...

Feasting on Hannibal
NBC's Hannibal is based on the character Thomas Harris created in his novel, RED DRAGON. You probably recognize the name Hannibal Lecter from the classic 1991 film, Silence of the Lambs, which starred Anthony Hopkins in the iconic role and Jodie Foster in the role of FBI agent-in-training, Clarice Starling. This show and the movies (Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, and the 1984 film, Manhunter) all share the same inspiration. Now, I’m still working through the movies and I may touch o...

Looking Back on 2017
Last week on the show I shared a list of 12 pieces of entertainment I want to experience next year. This week I want to reflect on 2017 and share some info with you. Episode 76 Feedback First off, though, I want to share a little bit of feedback from episode 76, “12 Things for 2018”. David Arington, who inspired last week’s episode and also hosts Helix Reviews wrote in to respond: I just listened to your 12 Things episode and I have a few suggestions for good comics outside of Marvel and DC. Pap...

12 Things for 2018
As you well know, New Year resolutions rarely hold up after the first month of the year, if that. Instead of making a list of unrealistic goals, I thought I would steal an idea from David Arington over at Helix Reviews. OK, maybe “steal” isn’t the word I want to use. I’m adapting the idea. How’s that? For the past couple of years, David has made a list of things he wants to experience before his next birthday. There are a total of 12 items on the list to represent the 12 months in a year. (Makes...

Justice League (2017)
In the latest installment of the DCEU, Zack Snyder brings Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg together to take down Steppenwolf before he can bring an end to human civilization. The general consensus of Justice League has been, “It was better than I expected” and “Not a great movie, but not terrible.” I don’t have an opinion that differs from those thoughts. While walking out of the theater, those were the exact thoughts I had. Sorry. I enjoyed Justice League much more than Batm...

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
When the first Thor film was released in 2011, I skipped it. It didn’t look interesting in the least bit. After renting it, I decided that while it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t great. When The Dark World came out, I was much more invested in who Thor was thanks to The Avengers. (Also, he had lost those bleached eyebrows.) While that movie wasn’t great, it held an interesting place in the MCU, since it was one of the first crossovers with Agents of SHIELD. As much as I like Thor, the movies simply ...

Batman: The Dark Prince Charming (Pt 1)
Batman is currently dominating the DC Comics universe right now with Scott Snyder and James Tyrion VI’s DARK KNIGHTS: METAL storyline. I plan to talk about that soon, but there were a couple of other Batman titles that caught my eye: Sean Murphy’s WHITE KNIGHT and the story I want to talk about today - THE DARK PRINCE CHARMING. As much as I love reading current comic issues, I find the task overwhelming. There are so many tie-ins and crossovers to keep up with. David and I talked about this in [...

Empathy for the Devil
I've been following JR Forasteros around the internet for the last few years, impressed with his knowledge of geek culture, as well as the way he pastors his church in Rowlett, TX. When he asked me to talk about his new book, Empathy for the Devil, on the show, I absolutely had to say yes! So, in this episode, I have more of a discussion about the book than a review. (Bear with me, I was up late reading and recording.) Huge thanks goes out to JR. and InterVarsity Press for sending me a review co...

Intro to Podcasting (Int’l Podcast Day 2017)
UPDATE: Beginning January 2018, Dave has been employed by Blubrry and has included an affiliate link to their services. In the past, International Podcast Day episodes were a list of my favorite podcasts. This year I wanted to take a different approach and talk about what podcasting is and how you can start your own. What Is A Podcast? Let’s start with the literal definition of “podcast”. According to Google, a podcast is: “a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a...

Stephen King’s IT: The Novel
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you may have heard about a new movie coming out called It. When I discovered Hollywood was looking to reboot It, I knew I had to take a journey. I had to track down the book and watch the original mini-series first. For that reason, this episode may run a little bit longer than most. Let’s start with the book. In the next episode, I’ll discuss the two film projects based on the book. I debated long and hard before I began reading th...

Netflix’s Death Note
Surprise! Another bonus episode! This time, Dave digs into anime via the new Netflix film, Death Note, which is an adaption of a well-received anime and manga of the same name. He also shares how his opinion changed after watching the first couple episodes of the anime. This episode was sponsored by Geek Fuel! Get 25% off your first box. I split this episode into two sections: "Before the Anime" and "After the Anime". I wanted my opinion of the film adaptation to be as unbiased as possible, but ...
