NEW: Fun Food Challenge: Cancer Expert Joins Saranne
Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne introduces a brand new challenge designed to support health and healing for those facing cancer, including those with Stage IV diagnoses. For the first time in over 1,300 episodes, the show features a "Fun Food Challenge" centered around plant diversity, with functional medicine expert Jacqui Bryan joining Saranne to lead listeners through a weeklong quest to eat 30 different plant foods. The conversation focused on practical ways to incorporate a wide range of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices into meals, and highlighted the crucial role of gut diversity in boosting immune function, mood, and overall well-being. Listeners are encouraged to bring family, friends, or coworkers along in this journey of food exploration and gut health improvement.
Jacqui Bryan is a functional medicine expert, whole health educator, certified health coach, certified nutrition specialist, and registered nurse. Over 150 episodes, Jacqui has become known for her creative approach to wellness and nutrition, consistently inspiring listeners to make lasting, positive dietary changes that support healing from cancer and other illnesses.
"We’re not looking for perfection. I just want you to be curious. Remember, the keyword is different because different is going to add diversity to the gut bacteria." ~ Jacqui Bryan
Today on Beating Cancer Daily:
· The 30-plant challenge is about eating 30 different plant foods in a single week to boost gut microbiome diversity
· Gut health is linked to immune system strength, mood regulation, nutrient absorption, and overall health, especially vital for those touched by cancer
· Plant variety, not just quantity, is the key, as each plant supports different types of beneficial gut microbes
· The challenge includes not just vegetables, but fruits (fresh, dried, or frozen), whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices
· Tracking is essential: each different plant counts once per week, encouraging mindful and intentional eating
· Herbs and spices, like cinnamon, garlic, and even cocoa, contribute to the count, making the challenge more accessible and fun
· The American Gut Project inspired this approach by showing people who ate 30 types of plants per week had more resilient gut microbiomes
· For those in active treatment, with GI issues, or dietary restrictions, personalization and gradual increase are encouraged, and consultation with a healthcare team is recommended
