So in today’s show, I’m going to talk about a research study that was actually done testing castor oil for a very painful condition that many of you write me about, called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The Meibomian Glands are part of the glands that are that are in the eyelid and they produce the lipid or oily part of the tears and in dry eye syndrome Meibomian Gland Dysfunction lid irritation, lid inflammation, major reasons why we’re not producing enough tears. Of course, we’re being bombarded by blue light from all our screen time, the visual stress we’re under.

And so I want to go over this research article and and talk about what happened when researchers applied castor oil eyedrops. It’s very interesting. Okay, so here’s the deal. This was a study that was published and ophthalmology clinical trial ophthalmology in 2002. And I will put the link in the notes so you can go to it. So the researchers one of the objectives was they wanted to use low concentration castor oil eyedrops for the treatment of patients with non inflamed obstructive Meibomian Gland Dysfunction better known as M G D. Many of you write me on this and you’re tired of using steroids and and other eyedrops that just don’t seem to work. So in Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, there is a major lipid deficiency deficiency in the tears and this creates an evaporator evaporation in the tears, which creates an excruciating pain eventually in the cornea because the cornea is made up of these tiny nerve endings and they need the lubrication and the coverage. Otherwise, you start feeling pain, dryness, redness, burning and so on. Alright, so the study was designed, randomized, double masked, placebo controlled crossover clinical study. 40 eyes 20 patients with non inflamed MGD participated in the study
05:00
The method used was eye drops containing castor oil 2% castor oil 5% And they were mixed together to formulate a homogenized oil eyedrops these were castor oil eyedrops, and the patients were assigned randomly to receive oil, eyedrops or placebo. So there were two groups six times daily for two periods of two weeks each

main outcome measures so at the end of each treatment period, the researchers assessed symptoms, tear interference grade tear evaporation they used things like Florida seen and Rose, Bengal scores tear breakup time, and Meibomian Gland orifice obstruction, safety and stability tests were also performed.
05:52
The results the symptom scores tear interference grade the tear evaporation the tear results the rose Bengal scores, the tear breakup time the orifice obstruction scores after the oil drop period showed significant improvements compared with the results after the placebo period. No complications were attributable to the eyedrops were absorbed or were observed the eyedrops were stable when stored at four degrees Celsius. Okay. Conclusions So the researchers in their writings said the following and I’m quoting the results indicate that castor oil eyedrops are effective and safe in the treatment of MGD.
The possible mechanisms of this treatment are improvement of tears stability, as it were as a result of lipid spreading ease in Meibomian expression, prevention of tear evaporation and the lubricating effects of the castor oil eyedrops. Thank you. You know I’ve been using castor oil eyedrops for many years. And I always get a lot of grief from eye doctors they say there’s no studies on it. What are you doing, you can put castor oil in the eyes. It’s dangerous, it causes this that and the other. And of course I have not had one ill effect from the castor oil when I’ve used it. And I’ve been very fastidious about developing this eyedrops, so it is certified organic 100% castor oil made for the eyes. So that being said, you can look at the study and you can make your own decisions. This is the way I work it in my brand and in my product line. But I wanted you to know about this study that was published a long time ago on the benefits of castor oil and how it supports our eye health.
