Most of us know someone who has had a stillbirth or a child dying shortly after birth. Sometimes conditions that could result in a child’s death can be detected in the womb by doctors. They can warn parents in advance of the likely outcome, and while this can help to cushion the blow, it can be very painful if the diagnosis is delivered in an insensitive way.
A group of mothers have recently spoken out about the use of the term ‘incompatible with life’ in these conversations, and they have received support from TD Mattie McGrath, who has proposed a Private Member’s bill in the Dáil seeking the end of the use of the term.
