In recent months the issue of homelessness has dominated the headlines with many groups advocating for the government to take action following the tragic death of Jonathan Corrie outside Leinster House.
Social justice advocate Fr Peter Mc Verry earlier this year became the latest freeman of Dublin City, for his tireless work in campaigning for the rights of Dublin’s young people over the past four decades.
From small beginnings in a cramped flat in the once notorious high rise towers of Ballymun and a parish club in Dublin’s inner city, the Peter McVerry Trust now operates three hostels, a drug detox centre, two after-care houses, a drop-in Centre, a drug-stabilisation programme and twelve apartments, housing people dealing with mental health issues.
Speaking recently in Cork at the Kinsale Peace Project, Fr McVerry called for rent control to prevent the “next wave of homelessnessâ€
Fr Mc Verry spoke to Wendy about his thoughts on the recent media coverage on the issue.
