There seem to be quite a lot of things going through the Dáil at the moment, so much so that it can be hard to follow.
Last week the ‘Children and Family Relationships Bill’ was introduced, which Taoiseach Enda Kenny described as the most important change in family legislation in the history of the State. Despite its importance, the Government would like to see it debated and approved by the end of March.
Hot on its heels comes an announcement yesterday by Minister for Health Leo Varadkar what he intends to prepare legislation on surrogacy.
Minister Varadkar said that the ‘the welfare of the child is paramount’ in what is being prepared, but some people are not so sure, with the group ‘Mothers and Fathers Matter’ saying that his proposals would violate the rights of women and children.
Kate Bopp from the Mothers and Fathers Matter spoke to Wendy about the issue.
