TC223: The Seven Pillars of Optimal Health

In this special episode of the Transformation Cafe, host Robin Masiewicz interviews Dr. Ted Peña, Doctor of Chiropractic, about the Seven Pillars of Optimsal Health. This interview was recorded live at Dr. Peña’s office in Riverside, California.

Dr. Peña has been a practicing chiropractor for over 25 years. During his practice he’s uncovered the “secrets” to optimum health, and how by applying them we can live longer, retain our vitality, and prevent the onset of disease.  Dr. Ted refers to these secrets as the “seven pillars” of optimal health. He also shares how he integrates these principles into his and his family’s life.

In the interview Dr. Peña refers to an article called Longevity, the Secrets of Long Life in National Geographic from November 2003. The information in this article inspired Dr. Peña to want to learn more about practices which lead to a longer, healthier life.

. . . in Loma Linda, California, researchers studied a group of Seventh-day Adventists who rank among America’s longevity all-stars. Residents of these three places (Sardinia Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Loma Linda, California)  produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life. What do they know that the rest of us don’t?

National Geographic, November 2003

Your body is a self-healing, self-regulating system, and when it’s given the opportunity then it’s going to be able to truly THRIVE

What are the Seven Pillars?

According to Dr. Peña the seven pillars include:

Time – take time for yourself; be a human being, not just a human doing; live in the present moment Movement – daily physical exercise/movement (dancing, walking, gardening, etc.) Healthy food – keep healthy food that is already prepared (nuts, berries, bananas, apples, etc.) on hand; if it’s readily available you’re more likely to make a healthy choice Nurture your mental, emotional, and social health (Relationships), whether that’s through connections with family, friends, church, spiritual practice, and so on Sleep and rest (remove distractions when you go to bed at night; turn off your cell phone, take a day of rest and brief naps if you can) Natural healthcare as the foundation of maintaining good health (e.g. using chiropractic, naturopaths, acupuncture, massage therapy, etc. on an ongoing basis) Choice – taking ownership and accountability for your own well being  Links:
