In this episode Jeff Traynor of Furbearer Conservation and I have a timely discussion around how we as trappers advocate for what we do and the actions we can take to help prevent trapping bans and promote trapping as part of responsible wildlife management. We talk about recent attempts to ban trapping, arguing on social media, letters to the editor, showing up at legislative hearings, talking to your representatives, and overall, communicating what we do to an otherwise uninformed public. We've talked a lot on here about fur prices and recent trends, but I've never really gone into detail on the broad economic factors impacting the fur market. This episode represents the first real deep dive I've attempted to better understand where we might be headed in the coming years. From the strength of the U.S. Dollar and the price of crude oil, to GDP growth in China and Russia, combined with the global supply of ranched fur, we go macro on this one. The bounce from rock bottom fur prices may be in its beginning stages, and as economies around the world begin to reopen and economic activity picks up, the backdrop of low inventories and increased fur demand should be good for prices. In this episode I take a look at some of the recent fur market news and specific prices for furbearers paid at recent auctions. Stay tuned for an upcoming episode on the macro-state of the fur market and what we might expect in the years to come. Support our Spo...

Ever wonder what it was like to be in the north woods before the Civil War? There isn't a lot of reliable, first hand information out there, but Manly Hardy wrote a great deal about his trapping and hunting excursions around that time. In this episode I discuss the latest goings on with me at TT, and then get into a reading from Manly Hardy's woods trip to the Allagash Lake area of northern Maine in 1861.
